Within General Mills, our manufacturing facilities are committed to achieving zero human and food safety incidents and it is every employee’s responsibility to fully support this vision. Maintenance Technicians are hired as members of a manufacturing team.  They are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of various processing and packaging equipment throughout the facility.

The General Mills-Kansas City plant operates 24 hours per day 7 days per week. Changes in volume and production requirements can result in changes in work schedule and additional overtime.  Maintenance Technicians must be willing to work any shift including nights and weekends.

The starting pay range for a Maintenance Technician position is $28.72 – $32.64 hr depending on experience.  General Mills also offers shift differential payment for those working off-shift.  Additionally we offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical/dental/vision, 401K, and vacation.

Main Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

 Job Function: Provide coverage as a troubleshooting mechanic. Perform preventative maintenance on all equipment.

Reports to: Maintenance Team Leader

Essential Job Activities:

        Troubleshoot/repair electrical problems of plant and packaging/processing equipment such as wiring, circuits, fuses, switches, electrical installations, transformers, motors and AC/DC motor drivers.

        Troubleshoot/repair mechanical problems of plant and packaging/processing equipment such as bearings, gearboxes, blowers, airlocks, spouting, and equipment install/change out.

        Troubleshoot/repair controls problems on plant packaging/processing equipment.

        Perform electrical/mechanical building maintenance and repairs.

        Use computerized maintenance system, Maximo, to execute maintenance transactions.

        Provide on the job training of new maintenance technician and controls technician team members.

        Provide input into mechanical, electrical and electronic designs of equipment. 

        Perform new installations including but not limited to conduit, wiring, controls, PLC programming.

        Perform new installations including but not limited to pneumatic line, spouting, airlocks, blowers, belts.

        Perform electrical/mechanical preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance work orders.

Knowledge of shop equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, production machinery operation and maintenance is required. Boiler, refrigeration and electrical licenses are a plus. Preferred 2 years experience in plant and production equipment maintenance.

Skills and Abilities:

Types of Equipment: Computers, electronic test equipment, multimeters. 

Controls/HMI (includes too but limited to): Allen Bradley PLC’s, RSLogix5000, RSLinx, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, Wonderware

Physical Requirements: Physical activities may include stooping, climbing ladders, twisting, shoveling, vacuuming and reaching while performing job duties. Ability to lift and carry 50-pound objects. Ability to distinguish between sounds or vibrations for equipment repair and colors for electronic wiring work.

Additional Requirements: Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics; ability to troubleshoot plant and production equipment problems (mechanical, electrical and electronic); ability to effectively interact and communicate with machine operators and outside vendors; ability to work closely with other team members to share responsibilities and solve problems. Ability to troubleshoot programmable controllers.  Ability to work alone and be self directed. Must be able to read, write and communicate in the English language.

Working Conditions:

           The environment is dusty and may be hot and humid or cold. Many areas of the plant have noise levels above the 90dB level requiring the use of hearing protection.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have the ongoing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • 1 or more years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks for extended periods of time including: standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting over surfaces
  • Willing and able to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Willing and able to adhere to all safety standards and wear all necessary personal protective equipment
  • Willing and able to adhere to all grooming requirements necessary for a food manufacturing environment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mechanical or electrical capability/experience
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
