POSITION OVERVIEW
 

The Avon production facility in Carlisle, Iowa, produces Betty Crocker baking mixes and Convenience & Food Service bakery flour.  Avon is located just outside of Des Moines, which is one of the fastest-growing metros in the country.  Des Moines offers vibrant downtown amenities, city parks with a variety of recreation facilities, arts, theatre, and more.  DSM is home to the Iowa Cubs baseball team, which are the Class AAA team of the Chicago Cubs and home to the famous Drake Relays, which are held at Drake University.

 

The Avon production facility utilizes three dry mix processing systems, 5 retail packaging lines, two milling units and production of over 90 SKU’s to support the Baking and C&F business platforms.  This facility offers a great opportunity to diversify learnings in multiple platforms, and develop, utilize and enhance engineering skill sets.  The Process Lead reports to the manufacturing manager and is critical to the success of the facility.

 

The Process Lead provides safety and servant-based leadership to achieve breakthrough production results on specific production lines/systems.  The Process Lead works to drive out top losses on a 24 hour, multiple shift cycle through a rigorous Loss Analysis process and Daily Direction Setting system, specifically through ownership of data integrity and process centerlines. This position leverages the process discipline of continuous improvement tools.  A majority of a Process Lead’s day will be spent on the floor with the operating teams building the team’s technical understanding and mastery of the system while executing the plan for the day.

 
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Technical and business content owner on systems/products/and technologies related to the production line.
  • Demonstrate strong trouble shooting skills through the use of Continuous Improvement (CI) tools. Show thorough understanding of the interactions between machine, materials, methods, environment and people. 
  • Develop/maintain material balances and unit operation capability information to ensure optimal production rates, parameters and formulas. 
  • Own centerline management system: lead process definition to identify centerline targets and document standards and coach team through centerline process execution and problem solving.
  • Understand capacity constraints and prioritize work to ensure further improvement in System Utilization (SU) and other performance metrics.
  • Provide technical leadership through Vertical Startup (VUS) process and participate in loss tree creation and support ongoing improvements. 
  • Owns Manufacturing & Quality Information Systems (MQIS) data integrity. 
  • Supports business initiatives as prioritized by Line Lead and Manufacturing Manager.
  • Leads portions of the daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly DDS meetings, including:
    • Daily reporting of top losses with a plan to address.
    • Execution of the plan for the day.
    • Weekly loss summaries.
    • Quarterly loss tree refresh.

Owns the following for the assigned lines / systems:

  • Health of PCL system: Leads identification of centerline targets, documentation of standards, and coaches the leadership team and technicians through the execution, problem solving and change management.
  • Changeover management system: Leads closing the gap against specific metrics (Human and Food Safety, overuse, etc.), timeliness and success of changeovers.
  • Ensures lines/ systems are meeting product attributes and process parameters that drive them.
    • Develop advanced technical capability on your line (machine and material interface)
    • Identifies and addresses safety risks related to top losses (equipment interaction) and changeover activities.
  • Supports development and leads execution of the 90-Day improvement plan to deliver the glidepath through loss elimination.
  • Builds capability of the line team to understand losses through data.
  • Shows a sense of urgency
  • Accepts the responsibility of the most critical PDMS (CL) and develops technical experts quickly to maintain the health of the process
  • Defines quality inputs for the process based on data and understands the requirements of the upstream and downstream processes
  • Ownership of a plant safety program including a potential annual program audit.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • High School degree required
 
PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
  • B.S. (or higher) in Engineering from ABET Accredited Program preferred
  • Engineering Degree required for future progression within Engineering
  • Experience leading a team
  • Experience leading change
