Within General Mills, our manufacturing facilities are committed to achieving zero human and food safety incidents and it is every employee’s responsibility to fully support this vision. General Laborers are hired as members of a manufacturing team.  They are responsible for the support of various processing and packaging equipment operations throughout the facility.

 

The Minneapolis Elevator operates 5 days per week, Monday – Friday from 5 am to 1 pm.  Shift work is likely in Minneapolis.  Overtime and weekend work occasionally required.  Up to 14-hour workday.  

 

The starting wage for a General Laborer $17.69 per hour with periodic merit increases up to $20.12.  Additionally, we offer a comprehensive benefits package.

 

Position Overview:

Safely provide sanitation and basic maintenance in all areas of the elevators. Must be willing to learn and perform all job duties within the elevators. Lead with safety 24/7 to create an environment that is healthy and free from injury and illnesses by actively caring and being accountable for my safety and the safety of my fellow employees.

 

Main Responsibilities

In this role, you will be:

  • Sweeping dust and grain
  • Shoveling grain  
  • Moving spouts and trippers
  • Climbing stairs and ladders
  • Bin cleaning:  Pulling 30lbs of grain with a snow rake
  • Opening railcars hopper bottom (automatic opener)
  • Moving the automatic car opener
  • Opening railcar lids
  • Cleaning (brushing down/blowing with air wand) overheads    
  • Using a wheelbarrow
  • Cleaning under belts (requires kneeling and scraping under belts)   
  • Entering confined spaces
  • Operation of Powered Industrial Equipment
  • Shovel snow and scrape ice (out of rail switches or around facility)
  • Operating the tripper and opening bins
  • Vacuuming and sweeping tunnels or boot pits
  • Loading out grain trucks
  • Various maintenance work:  lubricating, changing belts, etc.
  • Changing dust collector socks (requires lifting and pulling)
  • Clearing choked grain (could require hammering or using a ‘poke’ stick to clear)
  • Must be willing to work overtime

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

  • Sanitation tools:  broom, shovel, air wand
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Railcar Opener

              

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

  • Bend , stoop , or squat frequently
  • Push / Pull frequently
  • Crawl or crouch occasionally
  • Reach above the shoulder occasionally
  • Carry up to 50 lbs. frequently
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. frequently
  • Lift 51 – 100 lbs. occasionally 
  • Use both hands for firm and simple grasping
  • Exposure to moving equipment
  • Exposure to dust
  • Exposure to marked changes in temperature
  • Balance occasionally
  • Stand 10 hours a day
  • Walk 10 hours a day
  • Climb height frequently

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Continuous exposure to ambient conditions (winter/ice conditions)
  • Some work is done on ladders and/or in tight, confined spaces
  • Mechanical hazards
  • Exposure to grain dust

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have the ongoing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Willing and able to work any shift schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays
    • 5:00am-1:00pm, shift work is likely in Minneapolis
    • 5 days per week (M-F)
    • Overtime and weekend work likely during fall season
    • Up to 14 hour work day
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must pass medical and background screening
  • Mechanical Aptitude
  • Perform collaboratively as a member of the team
  • Good Communication skills
  • Must have the ongoing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • Willing and able to adhere to all safety standards and wear all necessary personal protective equipment
  • Willing and able to adhere to all grooming requirements necessary for a food manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
