Overview & Responsibilities

Within General Mills, our manufacturing facilities are committed to achieving zero human and food safety incidents and it is every employee’s responsibility to fully support this vision. Skilled Mechanics are hired as members of a manufacturing team.  They are responsible for the preventative and reactive maintenance of processing and packaging equipment within the manufacturing facility.

The General Mills Chanhassem  plant operates 24 hours per day 7 days per week.   This is a 3rd shift position from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.  Shift is on/off pattern is 2 on followed by 2 off, 3 on followed by 2 off, and 2 on followed by 3 off.  Cycle is every 2 weeks.  Provides 26 weekends off per year, 192 days off not including 3 weeks paid vacation and 11 paid Holidays.   Changes in volume and production requirements can result in changes in work schedule and additional overtime.  Skilled Mechanics must be willing to work any shift including nights and weekends.

The starting wage for a Skilled Mechanic position is $23.52 and hour with periodic merit increases up to a rate of $29.40.  This shift pays an .80 cent an hour shift differential. General Mills also offers shift differential payment for those working off-shift.  Additionally we offer a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401k, pet insurance, a legal plan, 3 weeks paid vacation and 11 paid holidays.

Main Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment
  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace industrial processing and packaging machinery, work tools and equipment
  • Provide technical support and plant leadership for equipment troubleshooting and equipment modifications
  • Perform both uptime and down time preventative maintenance in adherence to the master PM schedule
  • Perform corrective maintenance work orders
  • Repair and maintain building utilities
  • Have the ability to learn and perform minor machining and welding tasks
  • Design and layout circuits, install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors, and other electrical equipment/components
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives in order to increase platform performance
  • Assist with training new employees as needed
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required
  • Perform additional related tasks as assigned
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have the ongoing right to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 plus years experience in industrial maintenance or equivalent education in a related field
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks for extended periods of time including: standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting over surfaces
  • Willing and able to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Willing and able to adhere to all safety standards and wear all necessary personal protective equipment
  • Willing and able to adhere to all grooming requirements necessary for a food manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HVAC systems, pneumatic and hydraulic systems

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical degree in industrial maintenance or related field
  • Continuing education in maintenance/technical skills
  • Computer Maintenance Management System experience
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Perform both uptime and down time maintenance function
  • Utilize CMMS with platforms and core maintenance teams to identify and track completed tasks
  • Conduct corrective maintenance work orders
  • Coordinate prioritization of work orders with floor maintenance techs and Team Leaders
  • Train others in the platform on minor maintenance functions and increase their understanding of the equipment
  • Champion continuous improvement activities within platforms
  • Perform changeovers and end of cycle cleans including disassembly and reassembly of necessary equipment.
  • Perform master sanitation schedule tasks
  • Maintain clean work environment
  • Utilize continuous improvement tools
  • Utilize DACUM’s (Develop a Curriculum), one point lessons & red books as processing and training tools
  • Early management of downtimes, changeovers, cleans, preventative maintenance, etc
  • Perform additional team tasks as required (coordinate safety, training, continuous improvement initiatives, scheduling, etc.)
  • Ability to perform preventive and predictive maintenance on line equipment as well as reactive work when lines are down
  • Work off-shift and/or flex hours as needed or requested to provide support
  • Ability and aptitude to learn and perform jobs on and off the platform
  • Ability to learn and perform minor machining and welding, TIG, MIG, and ARC.
