Overview & Responsibilities

We are seeking a Product Development Scientist within Innovation, Technology & Quality that will be focused on our North American Meals and Baking businesses. This position will partner with business and R&D teams, Food Safety & Quality, Sourcing and External Supply Chain to develop briefs and manage an external partner development process to secure purchased finished goods and facilitate increased supplier collaboration. They will play a critical role in developing strategies, will own the total product offering (TPO) and its stewardship along the entire life cycle, and also ensure the operationalization of this new work stream. In addition, they will monitor contract manufacturing and industry trends and pro-actively build a knowledge base of partner/vendor capabilities and a future opportunity pipeline.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and process coordination of externally connected purchased finished goods innovation and supplier collaboration
  • Responsible for maintaining knowledge on the General Mill’s partner capabilities, as well as identifying potential new partnerships in coordination with Food Safety & Quality, Sourcing and External Supply Chain
  • Project management internally and externally: brief development, external direction setting and the overall coordination process
  • Collaborate with R&D managers, Food, Safety & Quality, Sourcing and External Supply Chain to activate best fit external partners against the business strategies, consumer needs, technical and business objectives
  • Travel to co-packers, vendors and occasional trade shows
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering or similar discipline
  • 5-10 years of experience in product/process development, scale up and commercialization
  • Proven track record with contract manufacturing and suppliers
  • Strong background and experience in stage gate process
  • Champion of consumer focused product design, food safety and product quality while also managing costs
  • Excellent strategic thinking, communication, collaboration, problem solving, and project execution skills
  • The role will require ~20%  travel to co-packers, vendors and occasional trade shows

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s/PhD degree in food science, chemistry, engineering or similar discipline
  • Experience in thermal processing
